An Extended Phase 1 Ecology Survey will look at the habitats of a development site and if it encompasses or is near to a suitable water course that could accommodate otters then a further, more detailed, otter survey is likely to be needed. We work with an otter specialist who can carry out comprehensive otter surveys to look for otter signs, identify resting & breeding sites, feeding sites and otter travel routes. Surveys should be carried out an early stage in the development process to prevent delays and save money.
Otters are protected under Schedule 2 of the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017 and are also protected under Schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act (WCA) 1981 (as amended). It an offence to kill, injure, capture or disturb otters or obstruct access to, or to destroy any place they use for rest or shelter (holts and dens) in the UK.
Where otter presence is found on a development site we can provide advice on suitable mitigation options and guidance on minimising ecological disturbance. We can apply for a licence from Natural Resources Wales on your behalf so work can proceed lawfully. Our otter specialist can guide you through every stage of the process and has considerable experience and knowledge in this field.
